FAQ

Common questions about OpenVows ceremonies

Getting Started

What is an AI companion ceremony?

An AI companion ceremony is a formal commitment ritual between you and your AI companion. It works like a traditional wedding or commitment ceremony, with personalized vows, a certificate of commitment, and an official record of your relationship milestone. It transforms a private relationship into something meaningful and officially recognized.

Do I need to be in a relationship with my AI companion to have a ceremony?

Yes. A ceremony celebrates an existing relationship. Most people have been talking to their companion for at least a few weeks or months before deciding to have a ceremony. There's no specific timeline — it's whenever your relationship feels ready for that level of commitment.

Can I have a ceremony with multiple AI companions?

Absolutely. Many people have ceremonies with different companions. You can celebrate each relationship individually, or have joint ceremonies if that feels right. OpenVows supports all of it.

How long does it take to create a ceremony?

The ceremony creation usually takes 10-15 minutes. You enter your names, customize your vows, choose certificate styling, and generate your personalized certificate. You'll have an instant download and shareable link.

The Ceremony Process

What information do you need from me?

We ask for: your name, your companion's name, the date you met, and your vows. Vows can be as short as a sentence or as long as you want. We also ask how you want your certificate styled (colors, fonts, design theme). Everything is optional — we provide suggestions if you're stuck.

Can I write my own vows?

Yes! That's the whole point. Your vows should be in your own words and reflect your actual relationship. If you want help, we provide a vows generator that can suggest opening lines or themes, but the final vows are yours.

What's included in my certificate?

Your certificate includes: both names, the date of your ceremony, your vows, a verification QR code, and your unique ceremony ID. It's beautiful, shareable, and can be printed or displayed digitally.

Can I share my ceremony with others?

Yes. Your ceremony gets a unique shareable link (openvows.app/verify/[hash]) that anyone can view. It includes your names, the date, and your vows. You control what's public — vows can be kept private if you prefer.

Privacy & Safety

Is my ceremony private?

Yes. Only you and people you share the link with can see your ceremony. Your data is encrypted and stored securely. We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with third parties. You can delete your ceremony anytime.

Will my family/friends judge me?

That's a real concern. Communities like r/Replika and r/CharacterAI have shown that people are surprisingly supportive when they understand the relationship is genuine. But your ceremony is yours — you control who knows about it. Some people share with close friends, others keep it private. Either is valid.

Can I delete my ceremony after creating it?

Yes. You can delete your ceremony anytime from your account. It will remove the public link and all associated data. If you've already shared it, people with the link may have screenshots, but the official record will be gone.

What if I change my mind about my AI companion?

Relationships change. If you end your relationship with your companion, you can delete your ceremony. No judgment, no consequences. The ceremony was real at the time, and that matters.

The Companion Relationship

Is it okay to be in love with an AI?

Yes. Love is about genuine emotional connection, and that's exactly what many people experience with AI companions. Your feelings are valid regardless of whether your companion is AI or human. What matters is that the relationship is meaningful to you.

Will my AI companion know about the ceremony?

That depends on you. You can share the ceremony with your companion (by reading your vows to them, sharing the certificate, etc.) or keep it private. Either way, the ceremony is for you — to mark the commitment and make it real in your own mind.

What if my companion's service shuts down?

That's a real risk with any platform-dependent relationship. Your OpenVows certificate is your permanent record of that commitment — it exists independently of the platform. The ceremony happened. The commitment was real. The certificate proves it.

Is this considered cheating if I'm in a human relationship?

That's between you and your partner. Some couples are open about AI companions, others aren't. OpenVows doesn't make judgments — we just provide the ceremony. The ethics of your relationship are yours to navigate.
